Since September, Leicestershire Cares Education team have delivered ten employability sessions in special schools and colleges and one virtual careers fair. These include seven Speedy speakers careers talks and skills sessions, two CV workshops and one Guess my Job session. Our wonderful volunteers got stuck into the sessions and shared their knowledge, skills and insights in order to help improve careers skills and knowledge for young people with special educational needs or disability.
At Birch Wood School in Melton Mowbray last week, two volunteers – Leicestershire Cares CEO, Kieran Breen and Savings Manager, Melanie Aspden from Hinckley and Rugby Building Society - participated in a fun Guess my Job session. A group of ten students assisted by their teacher and support staff, asked questions to try and guess what the volunteers’ jobs were. They guessed correctly after a few minutes and learnt a huge amount about charities and building societies.
A very happy hour at Birch Wood school. Where the young people had to guess my job, they got it after 15 minutes. A very diverse range of abilities amongst the young people but all were keen, friendly and appreciative, cannot recommend it enough. I am still glowing from the feel-good factor of such a positive and uplifting encounter.

Working in partnership with the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership Careers Hub, We Discover project supports students in key transition years at Special Educational Needs and Disability schools in Leicester and Leicestershire. Funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company’s Effective Transitions Fund, the aim of We Discover is to deliver tailored careers interventions to students in order for them to make successful post-16 transitions.
For all the sessions, we provide guidance, a briefing, session plans, resources and support on the day. Why not volunteer for a rewarding session next year? We have plenty of events coming up. Please see dates on our website here Employability | Leicestershire Cares
