The Education team at Leicestershire Cares are excited to start delivering a new employability programme, We Discover. It’s a partnership project which aims to support students in key transition years at Special Educational Needs and Disability schools in Leicester and Leicestershire. Funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company’s Effective Transitions Fund, the aim of We Discover is to deliver tailored careers interventions to students in order for them to make successful post-16 transitions. The project is being led by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) Careers Hub and is working with nine special schools across the city and county.
This term we’ve delivered a Guess my Job session at Birkett House where staff from Alltruck, Time Products and Zeph’s Café kindly volunteered to answer questions from students in order to guess their jobs. This simple activity offering engagement with volunteers from business really helps to widen students’ knowledge of the world of work and the kinds of roles available. The students were very positive about the session and the volunteers engaged with them brilliantly.
In June we delivered a Speedy Speakers careers talk session at Maplewell Hall school in Woodhouse Eaves where students heard from volunteer speakers from Peter Le Marchant Trust and from Leicestershire County Council. Students were keen to ask questions about the canal boat tours that Peter Le Marchant Trust run and were interested to hear about what a funding manager’s role is and lots of different kinds of job roles available with Leicestershire County Council.
We also delivered a virtual careers fair in June with speakers from Alltruck, ASDA and Leicester City Council. Students and parents learnt about the kinds of roles available in the service industry, picking and packing, Health and Social Care, truck valeting, and how to apply for roles with Leicester City Council.
We will have many more rewarding volunteering opportunities coming up on the We Discover project this academic year including a Virtual Careers Fair, Speedy Speaker careers talks, Guess My Job, workplace behaviours workshops, work tours, CV skills workshops, how to prepare for interviews and one-to-one mock interviews. We will release dates and times in the coming few weeks.
