Walkers & Son transform a community allotment for Mind Aid UK

22 May 2024

The mission of Mind Aid UK is to empower communities impacted by the effects of the pandemic and struggling with mental health and well-being. It can be challenging it can be to seek help and support, especially within communities that may stigmatise or overlook mental health issues. Barriers often make it daunting to access traditional support methods. Our focus is on uplifting people within these communities.

Mind Aid UK help those dealing with isolation, social anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and confidence issues, striving to safely engage individuals within their local community. They conduct creative workshops led by industry professionals, aiming to engage and inspire those most in need.

The allotment will become one of the main venues service users to access art, well-being and other creative sessions, while enjoying outdoor activities such as growing their own food and tending to wildlife.

Throughout the past year, Walkers & Son have worked closely with Mind Aid UK to completely transform the allotment space. What initially was overgrown land has now become an environment for learning, enjoyment, and community. Due to the terrain and a particularly wet winter, there have been delays, necessitating the use of additional specialized equipment, all supplied and sourced by Walkers & Son.

The transformation process has involved excavation work, laying slabs, building fences, and creating safe walkways, to name a few.

On a hot Saturday in May, 12 business volunteers from Walkers & Son dedicated their time to complete the project. They split into groups and worked hard to set up a polytunnel, greenhouse, and summer house. The teams demonstrated resilience and great teamwork, overcoming problems and encouraging each other to finish each task.

The Service Lead from Mind Aid UK was present throughout the day, offering help and providing much-needed refreshments.

We're happy it's all come together... we're over the moon with the result.
